Pi Network will officially start the Open Network phase of its Mainnet on February 20, 2025, at 8:00 AM UTC. This milestone is the result of six years of effort by the Pi community, aiming to create a global peer-to-peer ecosystem powered by Pi, the network’s native cryptocurrency.
Milestones Achieved
Pi Network has exceeded its goal of 10 million Mainnet migrations, reaching 10.14 million. This progress allows the platform to open its ecosystem for real-world use. More than 19 million verified users can now use Pi for various purposes within the Pi community.
Journey to Open Network
Pi Network’s journey began over six years ago, with the Mainnet Phase 3 starting in December 2021. During this phase, the network was in an Enclosed Network mode, which allowed users to:
- Complete KYC (Know Your Customer) and move Pi to the Mainnet.
- Developers to build useful applications for the Pi ecosystem.
- The Core Team to enhance Pi’s features and services.
In March 2022, a new mining reward system was introduced to balance network growth and reward users for their contributions.
Preparing for Open Network
On July 1, 2024, the network introduced a Grace Period to speed up the process towards the Open Network. This period encouraged users to complete their KYC and move their Pi to Mainnet. During this time, users who had migrated to Mainnet could trade Pi with other verified users. PiFest 2024 showcased the network’s local commerce potential, connecting merchants and users in 160 countries.
What Changes with Open Network
The Open Network will allow Pi to connect securely with other systems and networks. This will enable users to make transactions beyond the Pi ecosystem, increasing Pi’s usability and reach. The Core Team will gradually allow nodes to shift from Testnet to Mainnet, starting with users who have made significant contributions.
Safety and Compliance
To keep the network safe, participation will require:
- KYC verification for all users.
- KYB (Know Your Business) verification for businesses.
Businesses can apply for KYB verification on the Pi website. Once verified, they will be listed on the Pi platform, ensuring secure interactions within the ecosystem.
Open Network Launch Conditions
The Open Network launch date was set after meeting the following conditions:
- Technical, Product, Business, and Legal Requirements: All necessary preparations are complete.
- User Verification: Over 19 million users have completed KYC, exceeding the target of 15 million. Over 10.14 million users have migrated to Mainnet, surpassing the 10 million goal.
- No External Delays: There are no external issues delaying the launch.
Next Steps for Users and Developers
For Users:
- Continue mining and contributing to the network.
- Use Pi Apps and support the ecosystem.
- Complete KYC and migrate to Mainnet if not done yet.
For Developers:
- Improve existing Mainnet apps based on user feedback.
- Develop new apps to expand Pi’s ecosystem.
Moving Forward
As Pi Network enters the Open Network phase, users, developers, and businesses are encouraged to participate actively. This collaboration will help build a sustainable and decentralized community, driving innovation and expanding Pi’s global utility.
