The ACER team has access to an extensive range of lab and other facilities, such as Purdue's aircraft (bottom image). |
On
this page, you will find details of the ACER
CoE's research and development activities, funded by the
FAA and our industrial
partners. Starting in March 2005, ACER has received its initial
round of research funding from
the FAA (previous FAA funds were for startup and management).

ACER has begun preliminary work on
evaluating AeroClave's decontamination
system, which uses heat and controlled
humidity. AeroClave is
an ACER industry partner,
located in Orlando, FL. The purpose of
this ongoing work is to determine the
ability of AeroClave's system to produce
uniform air and surface temperatures, as
well as to control humidity throughout
the cabin, cargo bay and ductwork, so as
to permit destruction of viruses without
inducing damage to the aircraft. For the
evaluation, ACER selected the location
of 40 thermocouples and humidity sensors,
which are arranged and rearranged
in various patterns throughout the cabin,
cargo area and accessible regions of the
ducts of a DC9 at AeroClave's Orlando site.
The locations shown are just examples. From
top left: AeroClave's system, hookup to
aircraft, thermocouples: on co-pilot yoke,
on first class seat bracket, inside gasper
duct, under coffee pot, in economy class
seat pocket and on cargo bay roof.
